Abstract Paintings

My current work is an exploration which combines both the use of abstract composition and colour intuitively. The compositions emerge both in complex and simple formations at different times; some develop in bold configurations of vivid colours, whilst others are soft, delicate atmospheric compositions alluding to states of tranquillity. I am also inspired to create spatial compositions which are 'impossible' – structures that start off by appearing 3-dimensional turn into 2 dimensional illusions. By working intuitively, I find that recurring motifs, which emerge as bars (stripes), gates, doors and windows, allude to a paradox of emotional states of beauty, imprisonment and constriction.  I find that by using very tranquil colours such as pale pinks, in such compositions accentuate a feeling of melancholy.

Socially Engaged Art Practice

My photographic images of the markets in Marrakesh and Bangkok give testimony to my interests in the socio - spatial practices which have produced the space of such rich cultural markets throughout history. My work alludes to Lefebvre's theory of space and the effects of spacial practice, firstly, being imagined, produced and reproduced by individuals working in commonality. This concept of the market is intrinsic to the sustaining of community in the face of Capitalism's encroachment of space.
